Eating wild blueberries from the farmers’ market for the first time, I was amazed. Those little berries packed so much flavour, the perfect balance of sweet and tart, how could I have missed out all these years?
Since locally grown fruits and vegetables ripen on the tree or plant, (instead of in a truck or warehouse), they convert more solar energy into tasty sugars, yielding juicy, flavourful produce. Buying produce that is in season will also encourage you to experiment with new foods. Many consumers are still unfamiliar with the variety of winter squashes and root vegetables available throughout a North American winter. They are easy to prepare, taste great, and offer too many vitamins to be ignored.
Most grocery stores carry some locally grown produce, at least from the same continent, so if that is the best you can do for now, give it a try. Buying foods that are in season will save you some money too.
