Four Reasons to Use a Slow Cooker

Did you receive a gift card this Christmas? Are you planning to brave Boxing Day crowds? A slow cooker is the perfect purchase. A slow cooker makes cooking fresh, healthy food easy and inexpensive. Most importantly, you will have more time to shop, read, spend time with family, or in our case enjoy the outdoors. Happy Holidays!

The main reason we bought a slow cooker was convenience. I already cooked most of our meals at home, but some evenings we wouldn’t sit down to dinner until after 9 pm. By using the slow cooker, we get home from work and are greeted by the aromas of a home cooked ready-to-eat meal. This frees up our evenings for other activities.

A large slow cooker is ideal for cooking large meals for entertaining, or for having leftovers which can be eaten for lunch at work, or frozen and eaten on a busy weeknight. When I cook my favourite soups I prepare a double batch. Having a slow cooker cook the soup during the day, means its ready to eat after work and the leftovers can be frozen that night. In the past, when I used to use the stove, by the time the soup was cooked and cooled, I would be too tired to freeze it and we’d end up eating it all week!

The slow cooker is also great for entertaining because it provides an extra cooking space. How many times have you wanted to use the oven to cook two dishes but couldn’t because they require a different temperature? With a slow cooker, you can roast your giant turkey in the oven, and use the slow cooker to make a side dish or even a dessert. Plus it can keep it at the perfect serving temperature until you are ready.

You can also get away with cooking less expensive cuts of meat in a slow cooker. Since they cook at a low temperature for hours at a time, any cut of meat turns out juicy and tender. If you choose better cuts of meat, you will still save money compared to eating out or buying take-out.

The goal of this blog is to help you get the most out of your slow cooker while encouraging you to cook fresh, healthy, meals, instead of falling back on the convenience of processed foods.
